Argentina Citizenship By Investment for backlogged US green card individuals is not currently a live option as of September 2026. The Argentina Citizenship by investment program will not provide a way to advance a priority date, bypass a Visa Bulletin cutoff or turn a pending petition into a faster US Green Card. What the program will offer investors is a separate mobility option that will follow Argentina's own process and timeline and not the painfully slow option the United States has offered foreign nationals for decades.

## What a US Immigrant Visa Backlog Is

A US immigrant visa backlog exists when more people are approved, or in line, in a category than the annual numerical limits allow. The [U.S. Department of State Visa Bulletin](https://travel.state.gov/content/travel/en/legal/visa-law0/visa-bulletin.html) is the Department's monthly publication of visa availability. A category and country of chargeability are "current" when a visa number is available for that priority date. When they are not current, the applicant waits, even if USCIS has already approved the underlying petition.

Two families of cases produce the waits this page is about:

- Employment-based immigrant categories (commonly discussed as EB-1, EB-2, and EB-3). Per-country caps mean some chargeability countries wait years after an I-140 approval. That employment-based green card backlog is the wait many H-1B holders face. The wait is a function of the bulletin, not of whether the employer or the beneficiary is ready to proceed.
- EB-5 immigrant investor visas. These are also numerically limited. When demand from a chargeability country exceeds the supply of numbers, the bulletin can hold those cases even after a petition is approved. That EB-5 visa backlog is a visa-number wait, not a petition-merits wait.

This site does not publish a live wait-time table. Bulletin cutoffs move, sometimes backward. Anyone with a pending case should read the current [U.S. Department of State Visa Bulletin](https://travel.state.gov/content/travel/en/legal/visa-law0/visa-bulletin.html) and their counsel's reading of it, not a screenshot from an advisory page. The structural fact is enough for planning: some applicants sit in a multi-year queue after the merits of the petition are no longer the delay.

Adjustment of status inside the United States and consular processing abroad both depend on visa-number availability. A backlog is not the same as a request for evidence, and it is not the same as a denied petition. It is a supply constraint on immigrant visa numbers.

## Argentina Citizenship by Investment as a Parallel Track

Decree 524/2025 and Decree 366/2025 describe Argentine naturalization through a relevant investment, administered by APCI, without using the US visa bulletin. That is the entire relationship between the two systems: they do not share a queue.

The decrees do not identify a qualifying investment, and the pathway should not be treated as an open application program. A US wait, including an H-1B holder in an EB-2 or EB-3 category, does not open an Argentine file. An Argentine passport, if one were later issued, would not be a US immigrant visa, would not make an unavailable bulletin category current, and would not replace an I-140, an EB-5 petition, or a National Visa Center case.

![Passport and travel documents representing Argentina and US dual citizenship parallel track](/images/guides/dual-passport-argentina-us-citizenship-parallel-track.webp)

"Parallel" here means simultaneous or alternative mobility, not a shortcut inside the US case. Someone who wants to keep the US petition alive can do so. Someone who wants Argentine nationality because travel, residence, or optionality cannot wait on the bulletin is asking a different question. The Argentine file, when it exists, answers the second question only.

Program status has not changed for this audience. APCI has not published operational due diligence protocols or a filing portal. The [launch-date research note](/research/argentina-citizenship-by-investment-launch-date) recorded that gap in the published decrees. This page does not treat a tender cancellation as an established fact. A long US wait does not open an Argentine window early. For how an Argentine file is expected to be reviewed once one exists, see the [due diligence process](/guides/argentina-citizenship-investment-due-diligence) guide. This page does not repeat that checklist.

If the capital for a later Argentine investment would come from a company sale or startup exit that happened while the US case was pending, that sequencing is covered on [after selling a business](/guides/argentina-citizenship-investment-business-sale).

## What a Parallel Track Does Not Change in a US Case

An Argentine citizenship-by-investment application, when one can be filed, does not:

- Advance a priority date or create visa-number availability in the Visa Bulletin.
- Substitute for an employment-based or EB-5 petition, or for consular processing of that petition.
- Guarantee that travel on an Argentine passport is compatible with a pending US adjustment, a grant of parole, or conditions on a current US status. Those are US immigration questions for US counsel.
- Convert time spent waiting on the bulletin into Argentine physical-presence credit. The Argentine pathway described on this site is an investment route, not a US-wait conversion.

Keeping both tracks means keeping two files. The US file continues to be governed by petition validity, the bulletin, and USCIS or consular instructions. The Argentine file, once APCI is open, would be governed by whatever qualifying-asset and due-diligence rules are finally published. Neither calendar is a substitute for the other.

For program structure independent of any US queue, see the [citizenship-by-investment guide](/guides/argentina-golden-visa-program).

## When the US Immigration Process Takes Too Long

The US immigration process is often a source of long-term uncertainty for foreign nationals. Employment-based green card backlogs often extend decades (especially for Chinese and Indian citizens) and leave professionals and families searching for other ways to improve their mobility and long-term residency options.

Argentina's announced citizenship by investment terms are one option to evaluate. Government applications are not yet confirmed as open. The Argentina CBI program would be a separate track for investors who do not want their long-term plans to depend entirely on the US immigration timeline. For someone facing years of uncertainty in the US process, the question is not whether Argentina can fix the backlog. It cannot. The more relevant question is whether pursuing citizenship in another country could provide additional residence, travel, business, or family options while the US process continues.

As of September 2026, Argentina's investment citizenship pathway is not yet processing applications. Once the program becomes operational, prospective applicants will need to evaluate the final investment requirements, due diligence standards, eligibility rules, and expected processing timeline before deciding whether it fits their broader immigration and mobility strategy.

### Why Someone Facing a US Green Card Backlog May Consider Argentina

- A separate citizenship option: Argentina would operate independently from the US immigration system.
- Reduced dependence on one immigration process: A second pathway may give investors and families more long-term flexibility.
- Additional mobility: Argentine citizenship could provide another residence base and additional international travel options.
- Business and investment opportunities: Some applicants may also value access to Argentina for investment, business, or family reasons.
- A long-term contingency plan: Applicants facing an uncertain US timeline may prefer to explore alternatives rather than rely on a single immigration outcome.

The US green card process can continue on its own terms. Evaluating Argentina does not need to be presented as a replacement for that process. It is simply another option for people who want more control over their long-term mobility while facing an uncertain US immigration timeline.

Comparison

| Criterion | US Immigrant Visa Process | Argentina Citizenship by Investment |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Timeline length | A backlog can last years after petition approval. | Not processing applications as of September 2026. Overlap is hypothetical until APCI is operational. |
| Program status | Visa Bulletin and annual numerical limits. Some applicants sit in a multi-year queue after petition approval. | Not processing applications as of September 2026. |
| Shared queue | Does not share a queue with the Argentine file. | Does not share a queue with the US visa bulletin. |
| Effect on the other track | Becoming a US lawful permanent resident later does not cancel Argentine nationality obtained earlier. | Obtaining Argentine nationality does not, by itself, abandon a US immigrant petition. |

Until both a current bulletin reading and an open Argentine filing channel exist, the useful work is knowing which wait you are actually in, and not treating a second-passport brochure as a visa-number strategy. Official government links are on [Argentina residency resources](/resources).

## Frequently Asked Questions

### Can Argentina citizenship by investment move my US Visa Bulletin priority date?

No. Argentina citizenship by investment will not advance a priority date, bypass a Visa Bulletin cutoff, or turn a pending US petition into a faster green card. It is a separate Argentine track with its own process and timeline. It is not a US immigration shortcut.

### Can I apply for Argentina citizenship by investment while waiting for a US green card?

Government applications are not yet confirmed as open. An Argentine investment file cannot be lodged with APCI while that remains the case, regardless of a pending US immigrant visa.

### Does this page apply to US citizens who are not in a green card backlog?

No. This page is for people waiting on US immigrant visa numbers. US citizens who are not waiting on an immigrant visa should see [Argentina citizenship by investment for Americans](/research/argentina-citizenship-investment-american-investors).

### Is an EB-5 visa backlog the same as an I-140 request for evidence?

No. A backlog is a supply constraint on immigrant visa numbers after a petition may already be approved. It is not a request for evidence and it is not a denied petition. This site does not publish a live wait-time table. Read the current Visa Bulletin with counsel.

### If I obtain Argentine nationality, does my US case continue?

An Argentine file, if one can later be made, does not replace a US petition, does not change chargeability by itself as described on this page, and does not require abandoning a pending US case. It is a parallel track. It does not decide the US case.
